Countless journalist have written articles on it. Countless authors have written books on it. And Countless women have fantasized about it.
Mr. Darcy.
Why do women love Mr. Darcy so much? Rhys and I just watched Pride and Prejudice (The Keira Knightly, not Colin Firth, one. It was his first time, My 80th) and I felt obliged to yes, once again, type down a few thoughts about Fitzwilliam Darcy.
As I type this, in my head I am speaking with a British accent.
I believe that women love Mr. Darcy for a lot of different reasons.
The first, he’s fictional. Not real. We all crave what we can’t have (like Chick-Fil-A on Sundays) and we all want a fairy-tale. I understand that our on fairytales do come true in some-way, but I don’t want to settle for my own fairytale. I want to settle for this one. And unless I find a time machine and can somehow be teleported into Jane Austen’s mind, it looks as if I am going to die a lonely, old women with grand stories of love that only lived in my mind and never in my heart.
Darcy has that “bad boy” vibe going on. I’m not saying that us women enjoy being ignored, or treated poorly, but not being too forward may come across as mysterious, and that is a trait that we crave to see.
Darcy is simply a man who does not ignore his true feelings, no matter how ridiculous the situation may be. He loved Elizabeth, truly loves her, and that’s all we want.
That’s all I want.
I suppose I can take my own “motherly advice” and say my own Mr. Darcy is out there somewhere, but what if I don’t want my own Mr. Darcy? What if I want THE Mr. Darcy. Truly a Man must exist. Miss Austen had to be inspired by such qualities and traits within a man.
Surely, you do exist.
Perhaps on the next Valentine’s Day, I will have him.
