writing about yourself is always a most terrible thing. you see, there are rules.
rule #1 – you want to come across as “cool” so you might embellish on facts that aren’t entirely true. for example, “i love the violent femmes and read chuck klosterman.” while these things are “somewhat” true, i only own one femmes album and the truth is that i didn’t really enjoy sex, drugs, and coco puffs after all. so i don’t want to give you a false impression.
rule #2 – there might be things that you truly love and totally define you, but you’re too embarrassed to state so because these things are “uncool.” example being your love for mcdonald’s french fries and sweet tea and the fact that you relate to josie geller from the film never been kissed maybe better than anyone.
rule #3 – rule #2 might fall in the “cool” category of rule #1, and then you just look like the typical asshole for stating how much you love the smiths and harold and maude.
you see, it’s tricky. so why don’t we skip the rules and let me tell you how it is, plain and simple?
i recently graduated from the savannah college of art and design in their film program. secretly i want to be the next john hughes and this gives me permission to tell you that my top three favourite films are ferris bueller’s day off, pride and prejudice, and any film by sofia coppola. art school was by far the coolest thing ever.
i dj’ed my own radio show for four years. it was called john cusack’s power hour where i played music from movies. john cusack is kind of the best… i was maybe even known to throw themed food parties in college like “pie fidelity” and “bake anything.”
i also worked in a record store in high school… (which was really an fye, but maybe i’m slipping into rule #1 here.) if you’re interested in my top 25 favourite songs of all time, then i suggest you click here.
i dream of living in chicago and france. i’m a mixture between josie geller (never been kissed) and ducky (pretty in pink.) my favourite class in college was poetry (john keats, pablo neruda, and frank o’hara.) yes, i spell favourite and colour with “u’s.” i’ve worked on the tv show ugly betty and several feature films such as confessions of a shopaholic and the last song (which takes me into rule #3, but whatever… it rocked.)
i studied abroad in france, which was the best summer of my life. the best memory i have ever had consisted of my friend rhys and i running through edinburgh at four in the morning after being soaked in mud all day at a music festival. i love the fall. i love the taste of pumpkin and honey and coconut. i constantly try to hit mariah carey’s high notes in her song “emotions” and i know that one day i’ll get there.
i have a fascination with beards and mustaches. i once dated a boy in college with a beard and now i’m only attracted to wildly hairy men. thanks a lot robert.
i love candles and perfume. watching dance movies always makes me think i did the wrong thing with my life. i have a cat named amadeus and he is the coolest cat in the world (everyone assumes that just because his name is wolfgang amadeus mozart then he must be named after the great musician, when in reality he is named after the falco song “rock me amadeus.”) yes, i just referenced falco in my bio.
i’m a member of the moma, which i should then maybe tell you that i’m currently living somewhere on the east coast.
my bedroom walls are painted pale pink. i have a picture of charlie chaplin on my desk. outback steakhouse’s cheese and bacon fries are probably my most favourite thing in the entire world (besides my mother, music, and the wind.) i secretly wish i was zooey deschanel, alison goldfrapp, and natasha khan all wrapped into one. i’ve seen over 300 concerts. i’m always cold. always.
and maybe last but not least, although i find myself getting more and more annoyed with technology and wanting to give it all up, i get more pleasure out of blogging than anything else.
maybe some of my happiness will rub off on you…
